The Tradescants were leading players in the first great age of scientific discovery in Britain, and gardens were central to their lives. John Tradescant the elder first comes to notice as head gardener at Hatfield House, whose owner, Robert Cecil, sent him on extravagant shopping expeditions abroad. In 1618, he joined the politician Sir Dudley Digges on a diplomatic mission to Russia further trips took him to the Middle East and Algeria and, in 1630, he was appointed Keeper of His Majestys Gardens by Charles I. Tradescant was an inveterate collector, not just of plants but also of weird and wonderful objects and, after he moved to Lambeth, he started showing his collection to anyone willing to pay a 6d entrance fee, making it Britains first public museum. His son, also called John, followed in his footsteps, joining the Worshipful Company of Gardeners in 1634 and making the first of three arduous journeys to America in 1637. When his father died the year after, he succeeded him as Keeper of His Majestys Gardens, but he continued to expand the gardens and collection at the Lambeth Ark among the plants first grown in this country by the younger John Tradescant are Michaelmas daisies, maidenhair ferns, Virginia creeper, pitcher plants and tulip trees.
So its encouraging to hear about a new open-air exhibition in the beautiful gardens of Polesden Lacey, a smart Regency mansion that was given to the National Trust along with its 1,400-acre estate by the heiress Mrs Ronnie Greville, ne Maggie McEwan (as in the quite delicious lager). The show, called Garden Journeys, intends in its own words to “challenge the publics perceptions of the garden space”, a brave aim given that the last thing most of us want is to run into a challenge slap-bang in the middle of a herbaceous border. Especially in Surrey. But dont be too afraid. The artworks on show at Polesden Lacey may not be exactly genteel, but their challenges are fairly gentle. Scattered through the formal Edwardian gardens are 10 different artworks, each of them designed to engage with some aspect of the place. The artist Lulu Quinn, for example, has installed eight stone blocks on vacant plinths near Mrs Grevilles grave, digitally engraved with images of gardeners worn boots and shoes. Keen-eyed visitors will notice their resemblance to the famous painting of Gertrude Jekylls ancient (and doubtless rather smelly) gardening boots by William Nicholson, now in the Tate. Apart from being a legendary garden designer, Jekyll was a lifelong Surrey resident, so Quinns homage works on two levels - or perhaps I should say on three, since the boots and shoes shown here actually belong to some of the 400-odd volunteers who help keep Polesden Laceys gardens looking so trim. Clever, and thoughtful too.

A program in Portland, Ore., that lets locals and visitors use free bikes to get around the city could catch on elsewhere. More than 40 cities including Phoenix; Anchorage; Madison, Wis.; and Rochester, N.Y. have asked for information, according to Portlands United Community Action Network. Inspired by community bike programs in places such as Amsterdam, U.C.A.N.s Tom OKeefe came up with the “Yellow Bike Program” after his own two-wheeler was stolen.
Staffordshire County Council is aiming Sundays event at beginners and bikes and helmets will be available for hire. There will be a 20km ride, starting from the Marquis Drive visitor centre, at 2pm suitable for children and adults. The cost is pounds 3.

In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.

The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.

The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.

Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.
Children dont come with instructions. But parents might long for some when a health problem arises. “There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development.

Call it vicarious rage. Great, I thought. No doubt that Leatherman had serious sentimental value for the guy, perhaps a gift from a girlfriend, owned for the last 10 years or so, even if she had moved on long ago. But in the end, he did what any time-pressed rational person would do. He flipped it into the garbage and shuffled through security.
Cooper admitted that its ToolZall multi-use hand tool was a Leatherman product with a Cooper label but claimed that its error did no harm to Leatherman. A trial judge and an appeals court in San Francisco upheld the jurys verdict. Cooper wants the Supreme Court to decide that an appeals court can overturn a trial judges ruling, which the Seventh Amendment of the Constitution severely restricts in civil cases. The Dallas Morning News quoted a dean at Texas Techs law school, Frank Newton, who predicted the Supreme Court would uphold the current standard.

This instrument has dominated the production of popular music since its invention in the 1940s. Although primarily identified with both the sound and the image of rock n roll the electric guitar has made its mark on all genres of popular music from country to world beat. Combined with an amplifier and armed with a large inventory of special effects the electric guitar is an extremely versatile instrument that can produce an infinite variety of sounds. Its ease of playing and low cost have made it an important consumer good of the twentieth century. It has given the baby boom generation the means to make their own music and emulate the great guitar heroes of their times.Musicians began to consider electric amplification of the acoustic guitar during the 1930s when guitar players sat in the rhythm sections of the big bands and struggled to be heard. The Western Electric system of amplification was readily available and was soon employed to power the signal coming from the first primitive guitar pickups. The first electric guitars were hollow bodied acoustic models with pickups attached but in the 1940s guitars were made with solid bodies to better suit electric amplification. Leo Fender was the first to mass produce solid bodied electric guitars and his Telecaster (1951) and Stratocaster (1954) models remained in production in the 1990s. Fender established the basic layout of the electronics and the shape of his Stratocaster has been the most copied by other manufacturers of electric guitars.

The housing boom may be ending, but the regions new-home market remained robust in 2005, with big price gains in San Mateo and San Joaquin counties. Fueled by low mortgage rates and strong demand, the number of new homes sold last year in the Bay Area reached its third highest level in almost 20 years. The 15,735 new homes sold last year in the Bay Area exceeded by 3 percent the number sold in 2004, DataQuick Information Systems reported Friday.

The aim of this decision is to retain the resources in the business that are required to run the business or make additional investments in the business, as long as the returns earned exceed the required return. In theory, management should return or distribute all resources that cannot be invested in the business at levels in excess of the required return. In practice, however, dividends are often maintained at or changed to certain levels in order to convey the proper signals to the investors and the financial markets. For example, dividends can be maintained at moderate levels to demonstrate stability, maintained at or reduced to low levels to demonstrate the growth opportunities for the business, or increased to higher levels to demonstrate the restoration of a strong financial (capital) structure (debt and equity capital) for the business.

Like many suburb-dwelling Americans, I spent my teenage years skulking around the mall, my 20s sifting through the racks of every clothing store in town, and most of my 30s feathering the nest.
